Fayetteville is a city located in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 15,954. The city is the county seat of Fayette County. Fayetteville is located approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of downtown Atlanta. It is home to the University of Georgia. The National Arbor Day Foundation has designated Fayetteville as a Tree City USA. The city has two historic downtown districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Downtown Fayetteville Historic District and the Connally-Martin House Historic District. The Old Courthouse and Jail on Haynes Street are also listed on the National Register. A fire in 1918 destroyed much of the city’s commercial center; however, many of the original buildings were rebuilt soon afterward.
